Chapter 2 – What is in Sunny Town?

Chapter 2 – What is in Sunny Town?
The next day, Leo and Mia meet again. Mia brings a map of Sunny Town. They sit in the park and look at the map together.

— Look, Leo. This is the map of our city.
— Great! Let’s see what is in Sunny Town.

Leo points at the map.

— Oh! There is a park in Sunny Town.
— Yes! We are in the park now.

Leo looks again.

— And there is a library next to the park.
— That’s right! The library is very big.

Leo continues looking at the map.

— Hmm… there is a hospital near the school.
— Yes, doctors work there.

Leo smiles.

— I’m hungry. Are there restaurants in the city?

Mia laughs.

— Of course! There are two restaurants in Sunny Town.
— Two restaurants? Great!

Leo looks at the map again.

— Oh wow! There are many shops in the city centre.
— Yes, people buy clothes, food and toys there.

Max runs in the park.

— Woof! Woof!

Leo laughs.

— Max likes the park!
— Yes! And there are many trees here.

Leo closes the map.

— I like Sunny Town. There are many interesting places.
— Tomorrow I will show you something new.

Leo looks curious.

— What will we learn tomorrow?
— Tomorrow you will learn how to go to these places.

Max barks again.

— Woof! Let’s go to the park!

In English, we use there is and there are to say that something exists or is in a place.

They both mean “hay” in Spanish.

When do we use there is?

We use there is for one thing (singular).

Examples:

There is a cat on the table.
There is a book in my backpack.

When do we use there are?

We use there are for more than one thing (plural).

Examples:

There are three dogs in the park.
There are many pencils in the box.

Easy trick

Talking about 1 thing → there is
Talking about 2, 3, 4 or more things → there are
