Best Teacher Prize 

The winner of the World Best Teacher Prize in 2015 was Nancie Atwell, from the USA. Nancie, who received her award at the Global Education and Skills Forum in Dubai, was recognized for her work in teaching reading and writing. There were 10 fantastic teachers in the final part of the competition. But people thought Nancie was the best teacher and she won one million dollars. The World’s Best Teacher Prize is not only about the money. It wants to show young people that teaching is a very important job. 

Nancie did not want to be a teacher at first. She studied English at university and didn´t know what job she wanted to do. But when she started at a school of New York, she was very surprised. That was nearly 40 years ago. She taught her favourite levels, 13-14-year-olds, and they started to read great books and working harder because Nancie let them choose what they liked. The other teachers weren’t very keen on this idea, but she continued teaching in this way and now she rules her own school in Maine. With the prize she’s going to build a new roof for the school and buy more books. Giving away the money was, according to Nancie, “not selfless, but being committed to public service”. It’s not surprising that she won the prize.

Premio al Mejor Profesor

La ganadora del Premio al Mejor Profesor del Mundo en 2015 fue Nancie Atwell, de EE.UU. Nancie, quien recibió su galardón en el Foro Global de Educación y Habilidades en Dubái, fue reconocida por su trabajo en la enseñanza de la lectura y la escritura. Hubo 10 profesores fantásticos en la fase final del concurso. Pero la gente pensó que Nancie era la mejor profesora y ganó un millón de dólares. El Premio al Mejor Profesor del Mundo no se trata solo del dinero. Quiere mostrar a los jóvenes que la enseñanza es un trabajo muy importante.

Al principio, Nancie no quería ser profesora. Estudió inglés en la universidad y no sabía qué trabajo quería hacer. Pero cuando empezó en una escuela de Nueva York, se sorprendió mucho. Eso fue hace casi 40 años. Enseñó a sus niveles favoritos, alumnos de 13 y 14 años, y ellos empezaron a leer grandes libros y a trabajar más duro porque Nancie les dejaba elegir lo que les gustaba. Los otros profesores no estaban muy entusiasmados con esta idea, pero ella continuó enseñando de esta manera y ahora dirige su propia escuela en Maine. Con el premio va a construir un nuevo tejado para la escuela y a comprar más libros. Según Nancie, donar el dinero "no fue desinteresado, sino estar comprometida con el servicio público". No es sorprendente que ganara el premio.
